Habitat for Humanity Buffalo is a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International that helps low-income families achieve their dream of homeownership. Families in their homebuyer program purchase a decent, safe, affordable home with the help of grants, donations, and volunteer labor from Habitat Buffalo. The organization works closely with families to prepare them for the challenges of homeownership. Families are required to complete 500 hours of “sweat equity” towards the construction and purchase of their homes and must attend budgeting and first-time homebuyer classes. Habitat Buffalo's ReStore Program supports its mission by accepting donated appliances, furniture, and building materials, which are refinished and used in Habitat houses or sold through their retail locations. Habitat Buffalo has built more than 300 homes (including the rehabilitation of nearly 200 vacant or abandoned properties) over the past 30 years and added more than $1.6 million to local tax rolls. The organization is built by a community of more than 5,000 volunteers who continue to support Habitat Buffalo each year.
